Auf Wiedersehen

I’ve been lead programmer for the Fritzing application for 5 1/2 years and sole programmer for most of the last four. In that time I’ve closed more than a thousand issues; composed a couple thousand forum replies; pushed nearly 5000 commits; and cranked out more than 50 releases.

One can only run full-tilt for so long; it’s time for me to take a sabbatical. Before I go, I’d like to thank Reto and André for originating the project; Reto (and the government of Brandenburg) for the grants that gave the project such a strong start; and my past and present colleagues for putting so much of themselves into the work–the list is too long to display them all.

Finally, I’d like to thank the everyone in the Fritzing community for your enthusiastic (and early) adoption of our continual work-in-progress, and for your great patience with what has effectively been a distributed QA software releasing methodology. If I could, I’d buy you all a beer.

  1. Thanks for all the hard work! As a newcomer I am quite sad to hear that but I hope it’s only an “au revoir”.

    Long live the Fritzing philosophy! Who knows what all the young creative people will be able to make.

      So many times you have responded to forum posts and issues with patience and advice. You have helped create a fantastic piece of software and helped foster a great community.     I’ve used Fritzing for a lot of fun projects. I’m happy to had some contact with you about translating Fritzing for the Dutch users.
    I hope you will be happy with what you’re gonna do next.

  3. I’m also a relative newcomer to Fritzing, but not to electronics. I find Fritzing the most awesome teaching support tool for getting beginners up to speed. I’ve just about got the hang of creating new components, also. Thanks for the great tool, take a good break.

  7. You’ve done excellent work Jonathan and should be proud of Fritzing which is undoubtedly the most intuitive electronics design application ever.

    I hope this is not the end of active development for Fritzing?

  8. Thank you Johnathon, so much for your part in the Fritzing community. I bought my first kit from your site about a year ago, and until then had no idea how electronics worked. I am still very much a beginner, who is still trying to learn. 60 years young and eager to move forward.

    Enjoy your much deserved sabbatical.

    1. I installed your software yesterday, a few hours later I now have a designed and implemented simple project utilising a strip board. This harnesses the power of a Pro Mini 5v, soldered and mounted in a box, with a few sensors and working away as I write.

      The best thanks I can give you is by letting you know that I have only been learning electronics for a few weeks, and your work has improved my ability to breathe life into my creations and bring them to completion.

I’ve downloaded and tried out many schematic/PCB software packages over the years and Fritzing has been the first one that was straightforward enough for me to figure out how to use it within a few minutes. I’ve now designed, and had made, a couple of beautiful PCB’s – well I think they’re beautiful – and I couldn’t be happier with the result. The ability to plan breadboard and stripboard layouts is a pure bonus. Thanks!!

  11. I need a part icon for an, “unlabled”, 14 and 16 pin ic header. Also i need a LM311 compatator IC header. I tried to create them with little success.
